Marathi film makes it to Rotterdam fest
5 Jan 2009, 0621 hrs IST, Rahul Chandawarkar, TNN
PUNE: Satish Manwar is smiling from ear to ear. And with good reason. The young writer-director's very first Marathi feature film Gabhricha Paus (The damned rain) has been selected for the prestigious Rotterdam Film Festival and also the Pune International Film Festival (Piff).
Produced by Pune-based merchant-navy-officer-turned-film-producer Prashant Pethe, the film focuses on farmers' suicides in Vidarbha and uses Varadi, the popular dialect of the region.
Satish, an alumnus of Lalit Kala Kendra, specialised in dramatics and theater, but confesses that he always loved the film medium. "As a student in Pune, and even later, I frequented several film festivals and the National Film Archive of India to watch scores of films," says Satish.
Satish adds that he was most inspired by the skill and expertise of Iranian and European filmmakers. "The way these filmmakers kept their films simple and yet successfully exploited the satirical aspects, always impressed me. I always wished to make similar films," he admits. According to Satish, most Marathi plays directed by him in the last 10 years have been satires.
In Gabhricha Paus', Satish had attempted to narrate the story of Vidarbha's hapless drought-stricken farmers. "I have tried to project the issue as a whole, touching upon all emotions, their despondency, hope, innocence, anger and corruption. All this is a part of the Vidarbha scenario and I felt a strong urge to share it with the world."
The fact that Satish hails from Yavatmal in Vidarbha and many of his relatives are farmers, helped him relate better. "I have been a witness to farmers' tragedies and that is why I wrote this story some four years back."
Gabhricha Paus' is about the life of a young farmer Kisna (Girish Kulkarni), wife Alka (Sonali Kulkarni), son Dinu (Aman Attar) and mother Poorna (Jyoti Subhash). Satish says the story is a simple one, of how an intense farmer, like Kisna, battles the demons in his mind and those on the farm, to support his young family, which rallies round him.
Actress Sonali Kulkarni says, "I liked the role of Alka. She is very naive and full of hope. I was amazed to discover how a farmer's wife lives on the supreme hope that rain will not fail them. I hope Alka's happy character stays with me for a long time."
Actor Girish Kulkarni, fresh from success of his recent film Valu', says, "The role of Kisna was challenging, because this farmer is a very intense person, who seldom speaks and yet shows his emotions. Seeing the life of farmers in Vidarbha shook us all to the core. We realized that we complain about too many trivial issues living in cities."
